The senior-versus-junior gap is worth reading carefully. A senior at $175/hr who finishes in twelve hours costs less than a junior at $90/hr who takes thirty and needs review — which is why you should always ask for estimated hours alongside the rate. A rate on its own tells you nothing about the invoice.

The full year-one picture is in annual website maintenance costs in NZ. The figure worth internalising is the last one: budget 15–20% of the build cost per year to keep custom software current. It's the line most often omitted and most often regretted.

What actually moves the number

• Scope, above everything else. Page count barely matters; features, integrations and user roles do. A five-page site with a booking system costs more than a twenty-page brochure site.
• Design depth — template, semi-custom or built from scratch. This alone can double a quote and is frequently not stated.
• Who you hire. The same brief genuinely costs different amounts from a freelancer, a studio and an agency, because you're buying different structures.
• Content. If you're supplying it, the project is cheaper and slower. If they're writing it, it's more expensive and faster. Decide deliberately.
• Integrations. Anything that has to talk to another system is priced by that system's API quality, not by your requirements.
• Deadlines. Compressed timelines cost more everywhere, because they mean overtime or additional people.

How I price, and why

For transparency, since this post is full of other people's numbers: I work fixed-scope and fixed-price, as a solo developer without agency overhead. You get a written scope and a number that doesn't move unless the scope does.
